Lovespirals “Heartstrings” Music Video

“Heartstrings” is a lovely high point in the tracklisting for Lovespirals’ upcoming 5th album. The song is a celebration of the duo’s creative connection and the love that goes into Ryan and Anji’s music. The music video, created by the band themselves, is a beautiful representation of the song, shot during the height of California wildflower season. With 3 years of experience shooting, editing and producing videos for their YouTube channel, Happy Healthy Vegan, this creative couple have created what is surely their best and most professional looking music video to date.

Chillcast #445: Sometimes I Feel Alright

Sometimes I feel alright, and sometimes I’m just dark af. Today’s NSFW set flows from that darkness into the light with heavy bass, deep grooves, and thick atmosphere giving way eventually to more playful future beats and poppy melodies with just a dash of house. There’s a nice mix of vocal based tunes and instrumentals, as well as more underground talents and chart topping stars. I scoured SoundCloud this week and discovered several young new producers that you’re sure to hear more from soon! Check my playlist for the free d/ls at www.soundcloud.com/chillcast

Lovespirals “Heartstrings” Digital Single Released

Part Dream Pop, part Americana, the new single from Anji Bee’s band, Lovespirals, is considerably more upbeat than “Brother Against Brother,” the first single. Band founder, Ryan Lum, juxtaposes driving blues riffs and dreamy shoegazer guitar, finding a delicious balance between his earlier Love Spirals Downwards work and more recent Lovespirals work. Anji’s vocals exude the confidence born from years of familiarity with the material, with a lovely harmony of her natural earthy tone and haunting upper register.

“Heartstrings” has been 12 years in the making, beginning as a collaborative idea between Lovespirals and indie electronica duo, Beauty’s Confusion. The song was based around an acoustic guitar loop of Ryan, to which Chris of BC added beats and a Johnny Mars-esque electric guitar. The project came to an standstill over artistic differences, and in 2005 Anji sent her vocal files to DJ Pain 1 to gauge interest in the project. He quickly created a demo, featuring an amazing rap with his friend Guante. He wasn’t satisfied with the mix, however, and his version fell by the wayside, as well.

In 2007, Anji resuscitated the project as the theme song to a music podcast, enlisting Ryan to add his signature guitar leads to the original demo and to professionally record the chorus vocals for a shortened edit. The song lay dormant, once again, until production on Anji’s first solo record began in 2010. She was determined to create the definitive version of “Heartstrings,” building upon the 2007 version. The ensuing recording had such a strong Lovespirals vibe that it was decided to hold onto the cut until the band was ready to release their next album. Which brings us to this, the final version of “Heartstrings.”

Chillcast #444: Bring Back The Summer

Its First Friday and believe me, this is no April Fool mix here, it’s real real. If you’re currently enjoying Spring Break, then you may already be feeling some summer vibes, but I’ve been nursing a sprained ankle, so all I’ve got is music to keep my mood high. This mix flows from melancholic soul and chill urban tracks to way upbeat future beats and bass with a nice pop kick. Lots of great vocals featured, including some primo remixes as well as originals. Oh yeah, there’s some definitely NSFW content in this mix… 😛

Even if it’s still deep winter where you are, this mix is sure to put you in a springtime frame of mind, anyway. Future beats and bass abound, with a number of vocal based tunes. Enjoy!

Chillcast #441: Let Me Love You

Couldn’t resist doing another Valentine’s Day mix for the Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Collaboration that’s been going on since 2008. This year, I combined my celebration of love with the celebration of the 10 year anniversary of The Chillcast, by selecting one romantic or sexy song from each season of the show. Its interesting to hear the evolution of the music over the past decade from mellow chilled out electronica to the more edgy urban crossover sound of recent years. There’s a lot of good memories tied up in this selection of songs, and I hope you’ll enjoy the mix as much as I do. Wishing you LOTS OF LOVE this Valentine’s Day, and every day!!!

Chillcast #440: Tell Your Friends

Now that I’m totally free of any responsibility to networks, I decided to try something different, taking advantage of Mixcloud’s more permissive rules regarding music usage. Today’s mix is made up of original album cuts, rather than bootleg remixes, underground producers or “podsafe” music. I recently discovered the site, FreeLegalMusic, that lets you download free music via your local library, and was surprised by how many great new hip hop and r&b albums and singles they offered! All of these artists have previously been featured on the show, but most of them were remixes, so I thought it would be nice to share their music in its original, intended form. Let me know what you think in the comments below or over atwww.facebook.com/chillcast !

NOTE: I just might have to drop a Valentine’s Day mix this month, too. I’ve been participating in the Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Collaboration since its inception in 2008, so I’d hate to miss it this year! <3

Ain Soph Aur feat Anji Bee “Nothingness” on Internet Archive

Another set of rare recordings by the Long Beach based gothic industrial experimental music group, Ain Soph Aur, has been added to the Internet Archive. This 4 song collection was recorded at Bee and Johnsen’s apartment several months after the first band release, and each track was recorded separately with slightly more structure and intent than the former material.

Ain Soph Aur “Nothingness”

This second collection of music from the Ain Soph Aur collective was recorded by Bee and Johnsen on their 4-track cassette tape machine, with significantly less input from Wilkes, though his presence is still strongly felt. “Obsession for F.,” in particular, was built around a reworking of one of his poems and the percussion was created in part by Bee triggering drum sounds via contact mics placed on Wilkes body.

Novena to Santa Barbara – 05:33
Nothingness – 03:01
Obsession for F. – 01:35
