Chillcast #316: Post Fourth

Usually I post dance mixes for the Fourth of July but with the holiday hitting midweek and me doing the audio show every other week now, I kinda missed the boat. However, I did select these tunes for you on Independence Day so it’s got a sweet party flavor. Once again, today’s show flows from soft and dreamy to sensually upbeat, but with a funkier retro vibe this time around. I’m continuing to explore lovestep and chillwave, plus all of its mutations, as well as delving into various forms of house, with a mix of vocal fronted and vocal sample work. Today’s show flows from delicately soft and dreamy to sensually upbeat and highly danceable. The first half features primarily lovestep, while the second favors deep house, and most everything highlights lovely female vocals, both sampled and full lyrics. It is with great pleasure that I present a very special 1-hour interview feature on Swedish singer/songwriter/producer, Ernesto! He just released his 4th full-length album, Suffice Suffice, and I’m excited to share songs from this highly personal artistic effort with you. As a huge fan of his work, it was a joy to speak with him about his musical background, songwriting and recording history, personal beliefs, and the process of putting this album together. Jonatan is quite intelligent and well spoken, as well as an incredibly talented songwriter and soulful singer, so you are in for a treat!

I know, I know, I’m spoiling you guys with special DJ mixes on my “week off,” but I just can’t help it! As you probably heard, I did a DJ set last weekend for my friend’s new monthly event, Savasana. It was my first time using an iPad to DJ, which was a trip. I loved the set I put together so I just had to share it with you. This week my musical guest is the poetess and hip hop artist, Katalyst 5, of Montreal, Canada. I just discovered Lady Katalyst via the new Northern Faction 5 various artist compilation out now on Balanced Records. Today we are checking out the video for the sultry 4:20 RMX of 2 Luvrs by recent Juno Award nominees, Rise Ashen. This video was produced and directed by Labnoise with artistic direction by Lady Katalyst and Ugo Gitau, and choreograhy by Samantha Hinds.
