New & updates on Anji’s various projects

Moosefrog Review on GratisVibes

Posted on GratisVibes September 8th, 2007 by ikram

To coincide with the interview with Lo-Kiwi, I’m reviewing one of their releases, “Adrift” by Finnish duo Moosefrog. Adrift is a follow-up to the “Come” EP, which was the first release of the Lo-Kiwi label.

After an initial listen, ‘Adrift’ sounds unmistakeably like a throwback to the trip-hop era of the mid to late 90s, although its clear that Moosefrog have updated the template and the sound for the 21st century! If you liked Morcheeba, Thievery Corporation or other acts in that oeuvre, you’d definitely enjoy this album!

This stylish album has a alluring, sensual, yet dark and brooding quality to it. Maybe not as dark as Portishead but not as cheery as Hooverphonic were in their later days. The highlights include Anji Bee’s vocals on two of the tracks on this release. Anji (from the band Love Spirals Downwards) reminds me of Sade’s sultry voice. In fact ex-MTV VJ and well known podcasting personality Adam Curry calls it “the sexiest voice in podcasting”. Yes thats right, Anji does podcasts as well!

Definitely a release for all those skeptics who still think that the netlabel scene isn’t producing quality.

Anji Bee wins Podcast Award with Showgirls

Exciting news! ShowGirls, the conversational group podcast featuring me, the RumorGirls, Soccergirl, Cali Lewis, Share of Rock n Roll TV, and the PodChick, just won a People’s Choice Podcast Award! Interestingly, the podcast was inspired by the 7 female podcasters meeting at last year’s New Media Expo (previously called Portable Media Expo) where the awards ceremony take place. It will be a nice reunion for us this year as we get to accept our own award! Thanks to everyone who voted for us.

I am now one of 10 shows vying for this year’s awards. Woo hoo! The voting begins today — July 28th — and continues until August 11th. Turns out that you can vote once every 24 hours. So pretty please, stop by podcastawards.com and lay a vote — or 10 — on me!

PodShow leaves Sirius

Amidst the flurry of talk about Sirius and XM satellite merging, it has been announced that PodShow is no longer with Sirius. I only just joined Adam Curry’s PodShow lineup this January, so it isn’t as near and dear to my heart as it is to the core group, but it is still a bit disappointing. Honestly, I have no idea if anyone was really tuning in to the radio broadcast or not… As Julien Smith warned me, listeners never seem to email or comment on blogs, but as Marcus Couch pointed out to me, bands and labels seem to be impressed by the dual delivery system of the shows. And when you tell family or friends you’re “on Sirius” they seem to be impressed as well. So I guess I’ve basically lost some bragging points and some extra work. You may not have realized it, but even my show was edited a bit each week to fit the Sirius format and window. So now I can go back to a full 30 minute show if I like! There’s got be a silver lining to every cloud, right?
