Today’s show is moving away a bit from the spacier sounds I’ve been favoring the past few months into some more solidly pop territory. Of course, you know me, I don’t go in too much for pop music but I do have a soft spot for catchy choruses and big r&b vocals. As such, there’s actually a few famous vocalists in the mix today, though not always credited on the track. You’ll see what I mean. After the last show’s upbeat Summertime House Mix, I’m back with a more shadowy selection of music. Beautiful in the extreme, ambient tinged, and touched by sadness, this 60 min set features lots of lovely vocals – primarily female – with subdued beats. Chillcast Video #88: Active Child

Returning to the show is Los Angeles act, Active Child, with an awe inspiring new video for “Johnny Belinda.” Dylan Wiehahn directed, photographed and edited this video, which was filmed on the east coast of Australia. This song hails from Pat Grossi’s epic debut album, You Are All I See, released last year. Be sure to check out Chillcast #318 this Friday to hear the slinky White Arrows remix of “Johnny Belinda,” and the haunting Active Child remix of “Crying Game” by Hanna Cohen.

Returning to the show today is Copenhagen musician/singer/producer, Vindahl. Ronni is back with another fun retro influenced video for “Sometimes,” from his fantastic debut solo album, Serendipity, released by Tokyo Dawn last year. 2 tracks from this album held spots in my Chillcast Top 20 of 2011. Ain Soph Aur feat. Anji Bee on Internet Archive FREE

An extremely rare recording of an experimental gothic industrial noise project from the mid 90’s featuring Anji Bee is now available for free streaming or download on the Internet Archive. The Long Beach based group, called Ain Soph Aur, was formed when Bee and then partner, Justin Johnsen, met neighbor, Alan Wilkes, through a meeting of the Golden Dawn. Their mutual interests in mystery schools and dark music led to some very interesting musical collaborations. The bulk of When I See You was performed live in one session at Wilkes apartment, while “We’re Not Out Of The Woods Yet” was improvised later at Bee and Johnsen’s apartment. Several other friends collaborated on both recorded and live material with this trio over their short existence, but this particular recording is just the core group.

The band members included vocalists/tape manipulators, Alan Wilkes and Anji Bee, as well as musician/producer, Justin Johnsen, with occasional guest musicians.

Its been awhile since I dropped an extended DJ set on you, I know. With all of this sultry southern california summer weather this week, I was inspired to delve into all of the great house tunes that have been coming in recently. Primarily vocal and deep house, this 90 min mix is soulful and sensual, perfect for after-hours enjoyment. Oh, hey, I just updated the show logo today with a new portrait taken by Aga Furtok. Band leader, Devin Fleenor, has gotten really into lasers and their latest video gives us a peek at his custom infrared projection bodysuit that he wears on stage. “Star Power” hails from the Nostalgic for Now EP which was an IndieGoGo perk from their big European tour last year. Usually I post dance mixes for the Fourth of July but with the holiday hitting midweek and me doing the audio show every other week now, I kinda missed the boat. However, I did select these tunes for you on Independence Day so it’s got a sweet party flavor. Once again, today’s show flows from soft and dreamy to sensually upbeat, but with a funkier retro vibe this time around. I’m continuing to explore lovestep and chillwave, plus all of its mutations, as well as delving into various forms of house, with a mix of vocal fronted and vocal sample work.
